Action Needed: Calif. Legislature Sends Gun Control Bills to Governor
Contact Gov. Brown Immediately and Respectfully Urge Him to VETO Gun Control Bills

The California Legislature adjourned last week for the year, but before adjournment, they approved a number of bills that would create more gun control in the state and attack hunting rights. NSSF worked tirelessly at the California State Capitol this session, but our work is not over and we need your help.

Please contact Gov. Jerry Brown immediately and respectfully request that he veto the following bills:

  • SB 221: This bill would prohibit gun shows at the Cow Palace by making the lawful sale of firearms and ammunition illegal there. There is no valid reason why firearms and ammunition sales at gun shows held there should be stopped as the shows are safe, secure and conducted lawfully. The Department of Finance has weighed in on this bill and is opposed. It states that gun shows produce ± 13 percent of the Cow Palace’s net revenue; thus banning gun shows would reduce its ability to generate essential revenue for continued fair operations.
  • SB 1100: This bill would raise the minimum age from 18 to 21 years old to purchase any firearm with limited exceptions.
  • SB 1177: This bill would, with few exceptions, would prohibit someone from purchasing more than one firearm in a 30-day period.
  • SB 1487: The so-called “Iconic African Species Protection Act” would prohibit the importation, and possession in some instances, of certain, legally-taken, African species.
There is no evidence that such an age limit or a limit on gun purchases to one per month would have an impact on the criminal misuse of firearms. These bills will do nothing to increase public safety, or in the case of SB 1487 improve conservation efforts.

Gov. Brown has until September 30 to either sign or veto these bills. Please contact Gov. Brown immediately and respectfully urge him to VETO SB 221, SB 1100, SB 1177, and SB 1487. Contact information can be found below.
