Virginia General Assembly Convenes
with Gun Control on the Agenda

The 2020 Legislative Session Begins on January 8

The Virginia General Assembly will convene for its 2020 legislative session on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. With both chambers changing party control, firearms related issues, specifically gun control, is at the top of the agenda. Gun control groups led by Michael Bloomberg and Gabby Giffords spent $3 million during last year’s election and will expect new leadership to advance their anti-gun priorities.

A host of bills affecting the firearms industry and law-abiding gun owners have already been introduced and more are expected to be introduced in the coming days and weeks.

  • Ban on Commonly Owned Semi-Automatic Rifles and Shotgun (“Assault Firearms”) – SB 16
  • Ban on Firearm Suppressors
  • Ban on Magazines with a Capacity Greater than 10 Rounds – SB 16
  • Increase Age to Purchase and Use Firearms – SB 18SB 75
  • One-Handgun-Per-Month Law – SB 22SB 69
  • Firearms Preemption Repeal – HB 421
  • “Universal” Background Checks – HB 2HB 355SB 12SB 70
  • Red Flag Laws - SB 240
  • “Charleston” Loophole: HB 260
  • Prohibition of Indoor Shooting Ranges – HB 567
  • FFL Requirement to Notify state Police when Transferring Two of More Firearms in a Single Transaction – HB 425
  • Undetectable Firearms – HB 427

The Senate Courts of Justice Committee will meet for the first time on Monday, January 13, and could consider some of these anti-gun bills then. Please contact the committee chairman, Senator John Edwards, and respectfully urge him to oppose any guns bans, gun rationing, or so-called “universal” background check.
