Alabama Allows Most ‘Gun Shops’ to Remain Operational

On March 27, 2020, the Alabama State Health Officer issued an Emergency Order “suspending certain public gatherings due to risk of infection by COVID-19.” As part of the Order, Public Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris deemed certain businesses as “non-essential.”

Alabama gun shops may remain open if they are not a “sporting goods store,” according to this “Safer at Home” Statewide Public Health Order Frequently Asked Questions document published by the Alabama Dept. of Health. Sporting goods stores may offer delivery and curbside services to customers, however they must continue to abide by all ATF rules and regulations when dealing in firearms and ammunition.

NSSF® has requested clarification on this issue and we will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates.

NSSF urges all members to closely follow CDC guidelines, practice social distancing and take precautions to protect the health of their employees and customers.
