Firearm Retailers Deemed ‘Essential’ in ME Emergency Order

Today Governor Janet Mills updated the list of Essential Business Operations to include “gun shops.”  This reversal from her earlier order follows the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) inclusion of the firearm industry’s manufacturing, distribution, retail and range businesses as essential critical services that should remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic that was released over the weekend.

Maine firearm and ammunition retailers will remain open as an essential business during emergency orders that close non-essential businesses in the state through April 30th.   The order closes non-essential businesses in an effort to control infection from COVID-19.

This designation of firearm retailers as an essential service allows local law enforcement and individuals to continue to obtain the necessary firearms, ammunition, accessories and safety-related items. During times of emergency, self-protection and protection of loved ones is vital.

NSSF® urges all members to comply with the requirements of the Executive Order, closely follow CDC guidelines, practice social distancing, and take precautions to protect the health of their employees and customers. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as they become available.
