Alabama Issues “Stay at Home” Order – Firearm Industry Deemed “Essential”

Alabama has issued a statewide “Stay at Home” Order in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19. The Order, which will take effect Saturday, April 4, at 5:00 p.m. and last until April 30, requires people to stay at their residence unless participating in “essential activities.” See the full Order here

Consistent with NSSF®’s request, the Order includes numerous provisions for those in the firearm industry deeming them “essential.” Specifically, the Order includes “gun stores” and “firearm and ammunition manufacturers and retailers” as “Essential business and operations.”  Additionally, the Order contains an explicit reference to the Department of Homeland Security’s CISA guidance on essential workers. The language of the guidance at the request of NSSF, includes “workers supporting the operation of firearm or ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and shooting ranges.”

“Big box” stores falling under the “essential retailers” section are able to operate, but must adhere to specific guidelines, including Emergency maximum capacity rate, Social distancing, and Sanitation. Please see Section 6 of the Order for complete details.

This Order supersedes all previous orders. NSSF urges all members to comply with the requirements of the Order, closely follow CDC guidelines, practice social distancing and take precautions to protect the health and safety of their employees and customers.
