Update: Minn. Shooting Ranges Ordered Closed by Governor Walz

Governor Tim Walz issued Executive Order 20-33 on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. This new order is an extension of the governor’s previous “stay at home” order, and specifically affects the firearm industry. It contains a specific exemption for “workers supporting licensed businesses that sell or service firearms” under section 6.o.ii. This exemption is required by Minnesota Statutes 2019, section 624.7192.
 
Unfortunately, section 6.o.ii of the new executive order also mandates that “gun ranges and clubs” be closed down for the duration of the order. This contradicts other sections of the order that exempt workers defined in the updated U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) guidance that was issued on March 28, 2020. NSSF^® worked with the Trump administration to ensure the firearm industry be included in the updated CISA list. Under the section titled “Law Enforcement, Public Safety, and Other First Responders,” the updated CISA guidance specifically lists “workers supporting the operation of firearm or ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and shooting ranges.”
 
We are concerned about the inconsistencies in the order and have brought these to the attention of the administration. However, at this time NSSF recommends that Minnesota shooting ranges follow Executive Order 20-33 and close down. We will continue working towards clarity on this important issue but do not want our industry members to be out of compliance and penalized. We will alert you as soon as possible of important updates or clarification.
