Action Alert: Albuquerque City Council Proposes Resolution to Gut Citizens’ Right to Keep and Bear Arms
The Albuquerque City Council will meet on September 9at 3 p.m., and will consider Council Resolution 20-68, encouraging the state legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would allow New Mexico’s big cities to implement Michael Bloomberg’s radical New York-style gun control agenda. Currently, the New Mexico Constitution prohibits local jurisdictions from imposing their own gun control schemes. Only the state legislature has the power to implement laws affecting gun rights.
If Article II, Section 6 of the Constitution is amended in this manner, cities like Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces will undoubtedly adopt gun and magazine bans, limit the ability of citizens to carry firearms for self-defense, impose draconian regulations on gun store owners and much more. A patchwork of laws will develop around the state that will be designed to ensnare honest, law-abiding and well-meaning gun owners.
It is essential that New Mexicans take action and notify members of the Albuquerque City Council that the constitutional right to keep and bear arms should not be diminished in any manner. The gun controls they hope to adopt through a constitutional amendment are not the answer to violent crime. They will only impact law-abiding New Mexicans and make the state a more dangerous place.
Please contact each member of the City Council and tell them you oppose Resolution 20-68.
