New Hampshire Alert: Bill to Streamline Background Checks for Handgun Purchases to be Considered
Urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to Support SB 141

The New Hampshire Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider Senate Bill 141 tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 1pm ET. Introduced by Republican state Senator Bob Giuda, SB 141 would abolish the New Hampshire gun line, which under the Department of Safety, performs all background checks related to the store purchase of handguns, and replace such background checks with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

Due to overwhelming demand, the New Hampshire background check system has been overloaded, causing significant delays for background checks on handguns, burdening FFLs and potential buyers. The gun line would be replaced by the same system utilized for long gun background checks, the FBI’s NICS system. Moving to a FBI NICS check should provide a seamless transition and will likely do away with the long delays currently being experienced. As you may know, NICS checks are typically completed within a matter of minutes.

Please contact members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and respectfully urge them to support SB 141. In doing so, they will streamline the background check process by utilizing the FBI NICS system for handgun purchases.
