CANCELLED: Urgent Alert - Michigan Firearm Bill Hearing Postponed
In light of the tragic events of this past weekend, the committee has decided to postpone the below mentioned hearing. This hearing will no longer take place tomorrow. We will send out another alert when it has been rescheduled.
The bills to protect the Michigan firearm industry from future emergency orders have officially been scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Government Operations Committee this Wednesday, May 18 at 12 p.m.
Earlier this year, two NSSF® priority bills to protect the firearm industry, hunting, fishing, and trapping during declared emergencies passed out of the Michigan House of Representatives. Those bills, HB 5187 and 5188, are now in the senate along with identical senate companion bills, SB 950 and 951.
Michigan was one of just 7 states in the country to refuse to designate the firearm industry as “essential” during the COVID-19 related “stay home” orders of 2020. These bills would amend the “Emergency management act” and “Public health code” respectively, to disallow future emergency orders that would “prohibit, suspend, or limit” the firearm industry and Second Amendment rights of Michigan residents.
If you would like to join us in testifying in person on Wednesday, please contact Chris Lee, NSSF’s Midwest Director of Government Relations – State Affairs, at clee@nssf.org so that he can notify the committee.
