South Carolina Sunday Hunting Bill Advances from House

H. 4614 Expands Sunday Hunting Opportunities

Legislation that would vastly expand Sunday hunting opportunities was recently approved by the South Carolina House of Representatives by a vote of 65-38. House Bill 4614, sponsored by state Rep. Bobby Cox (R-21) and strongly supported by NSSF®, would require the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to promulgate rules and regulations to allow Sunday hunting on Wildlife Managements Areas, and have final regulations to the Legislature by December 21, 2022. SCDNR regulations currently prohibit hunting on public lands on Sunday, allowing only those with private property, or access to private property, the ability to go afield and hunt on Sunday.

Sunday hunting is an excellent vehicle to recruit new hunter-conservationists. Due to the greater prevalence of academic, athletic, and other competing activities that take place on Saturday, it is likely that allowing Sunday hunting will more than double the number of days children can hunt. Additionally, for those adults who work Monday through Friday, or Saturday, this would allow one more chance to go afield and hunt. With access being one of the greatest barriers to getting new people involved in hunting, NSSF® strongly supports H. 4614 as a way to help remove one of those obstacles to recruiting new hunters or retaining existing hunters.

H. 4614 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Fish, Game and Forestry, but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.
