Rhode Island Democrats Will Confiscate Lawfully-Owned Magazines

As mentioned last week, Speaker Shekarchi and others in the House are moving forward on numerous antigun bills as a response to recent tragedies. One of the most egregious bills seeks to confiscate legally-owned property with no reimbursement. Every single gun owner in Rhode Island will be made a felon if they continue to possess standard capacity magazines. House Bill 6614 makes it a felony for an individual to possess any semiautomatic firearm magazine which is capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. A violation is punishable by up to five years imprisonment or a fine of up to $5,000.

The magazine ban, along with a 21 year old age limit to purchase a long gun, will be up for consideration in committee on Thursday. House Bill 7457 increases the age from eighteen (18) to twenty-one (21) years for lawful sale of firearms or ammunition.

Instead of trying to address the root cause of these tragedies, your Democratic legislators and House leadership believe it is necessary to make law-abiding citizens felons.

Unfortunately, none of the proposals would do anything to increase public safety. New York already has an “assault” weapon ban, magazine capacity restrictions, and strong red flag laws and none of it did anything to deter a madman in Buffalo.

We urge you to take 30 seconds out of your day and call to express your opposition to any antigun bills. Tell them you do not want to be a criminal.
