Washington State to Consider Multiple Anti-Industry Bills House Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee to Hold Gun Control Hearings
Your NSSF® Government Relations team has received intel that the Washington State House will be holding a hearing on a multitude of egregious bills designed to erode Washingtonians Second Amendment rights and fundamentally alter the firearm industry in the Evergreen State. While the full list hasn’t been released to the general public, we can expect most of the following bills to be heard next Tuesday, January 17, in Olympia, Washington.
HB 1178 – If passed would end state preemption, allowing cities, counties and municipalities to implement gun control ordinances and regulations.
HB 1180 – If passed would ban the manufacture, sale, purchase and transfer of so-called “assault rifles.”
HB 1143 – Creates onerous permit-to-purchase requirements for all firearm sales in the state.
HB 1144 – Enhanced background checks that add additional disqualifiers for citizens wishing to purchase a firearm.
SB 5078 – Eliminates immunity for firearm manufacturers and allows citizens to sue businesses for criminal misuse of products. *(Likely won’t be heard next week)
Over the past few legislative cycles in Washington State, the firearm industry has been successful in narrowly stopping multiple efforts by the legislature to ban Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs). But given the results of the 2022 election, the threat is very real.
