Maryland: Anti-Industry Bills Scheduled for Hearings This Week and Next
Voice Your Opposition to SB 86 and HB 259/SB 113

Several firearm industry-related bills have been scheduled for committee hearing in the Maryland General Assembly. Each of these bills would negatively impact the industry’s ability to do business and the ability of young law-abiding citizens to purchase a firearm for lawful purposes.

House Bill 259 and Senate Bill 113 seek to decimate the firearm industry by gutting the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). Specifically, HB 259/SB 113 would allow the Maryland attorney general and others to file suit against the firearm industry for the criminal misuse or unlawful possession of firearms in Maryland. HB 259 will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee this Wednesday, Feb. 1. SB 113 will be heard by the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee next Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Additionally, Senate Bill 86 would prohibit the possession of a rifle or shotgun by anyone under the age of 21. While there are very limited exceptions, SB 86 removes the ability of adults between 18-20 from not only purchasing a rifle or shotgun for self-defense, hunting and other recreational purposes, but bars the possession of such firearms. SB 86 would also prohibit the purchase of ammunition by anyone under 21 years of age. SB 86 will also receive a hearing during the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on Feb. 7.
