New Mexico Legislature Seeking to Enact Radical Gun Control Measures
Please Contact Your State Representative Today!

On Friday, Feb. 17, the House Judiciary Committee will meet to consider two radical gun control bills. This is a continuation of what has proven to be an unprecedented legislative session in the Land of Enchantment. Never before have the citizens witnessed such a dramatic frontal assault on their Constitutionally-enshrined right to keep and bear arms.

Please contact your state representative today and inform them of your strong opposition to these bills.

House Bill 100 – This bill sponsored by Representative Andrea Romero (D – District 46) and mandates a minimum 14-day waiting period on the sale or transfer of all firearms. This bill will delay a citizen’s ability to obtain firearms for the purpose of protection if a critical need materializes. A right delayed is a right denied.

House Bill 101 – This bill also sponsored by Andrea Romero (D – District 46) and would ban the manufacture, possession and transfer of commonly-owned semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns as so-called “assault weapons.” This ban also applies to standard-capacity magazines that are capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition for rifles and 15 rounds for handguns. The introduced bill required that banned firearms be removed from the state, rendered permanently inoperable or surrendered to law enforcement by July 1, 2023. Violations will be punished as a fourth degree felony. The Committee will be considering an amendment (found under the “text” tab after clicking on the link to the bill) that strikes and replaces the existing language in the bill. One change is the inclusion of a grandfathering clause that would allow existing owners to maintain ownership as long as they are registered with the state. Another provision would ban .50 BMG rifles.

The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Room 309 of the State Capitol. Please attend in person to voice your objections if you are able. If you are unable to attend the hearing in person, please be sure to tune into the webinar by clicking here. You may “raise your hand” in the webinar to provide testimony on each bill. Having your voice heard is essential. The legislators advocating for these draconian gun control measures truly believe that few New Mexicans will ever be affected. This misperception must be ended by citizen participation.
