Many Bills In New Mexico Threatening The Firearm Industry
Contact Your State Representative or Senator Today!

As the Governor and several Democrat lawmakers promised prior to the start of the 30-day legislative session, many bills have been introduced to punish law-abiding gun owners and members of the highly regulated firearm industry. The process in Santa Fe is moving at breakneck speed so it is critical that you contact your state representative and state senator today and ask that they oppose the following bills directly affecting members of the industry:

House Bill 114 by Rep. Chritine Chandler – Weaponizes the civil justice system to financially destroy all individuals even remotely involved in the firearm industry. This legislation is intended to circumvent the critical protections provided by the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) and hold members of the industry civilly liable for the reckless or criminal actions of third parties over whom they have no control.

House Bill 127 by Rep. Reena Szczepanski – Prohibits citizens under the age of 21 from buying or possessing semi-automatic firearms under most conditions. This prohibition also applies to standard capacity magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

House Bill 129 by Rep. Andrea Romero – Imposes a 14-business day waiting period before any firearm may be transferred to a buyer. Transfers while the federal background check is still pending are strictly prohibited.

House Bill 137 by Rep. Andrea Romero – Bans the manufacture, sale, and transfer of nearly all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, as well as many commonly-owned handguns. The future acquisition of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds would be prohibited. Owners of prohibited firearm must register them by January 1, 2025 in order to retain legal possession. Finally, the sale, transfer, or manufacture of registered machine guns or their parts is strictly prohibited.

House Bill 144 by Rep. Dayan Hochman-Vigil – Establishes the Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Interdiction in the Governor’s Office to provide taxpayer funding for anti-gun junk science and gun control advocacy.

Senate Joint Resolution 12 by Sen. Peter Wirth – Amends the state constitution to allow municipalities and counties to regulate firearms and their possession in a manner more restrictive than the state.

Senate Bill 69 by Sen. Joseph Cervantes – Imposes a 14-business day waiting period before any firearm may be transferred to a buyer. Those who possess a valid New Mexico concealed carry license are exempted.

Senate Bill 90 by Sen. Linda Lopez – Assesses an 11 percent excise tax on all firearms, ammunition, firearm precursor parts and suppressors. It is to be collected by the retailer and later deposited into a fund for services to children and families suffering from abuse and neglect.
