Federal Shutdown Guidance from NSSF
As you are likely aware, beginning tonight at midnight, the federal government could possibly shut down due to a failure to reach agreement on a Continuing Resolution funding bill to keep the government open. This could possibly disrupt the ability of some industry members to conduct business as parts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) and the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) could close.
NSSF has confirmed with officials that FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) will remain fully operational during any possible government shutdown.
Most other ATF services to the industry, however, may not be fully staffed, including National Firearms Act (NFA) Division for commercial activity, Imports branch, Firearm and Ammunition Technology Division (FATD), etc. It is unclear if the licensing center will remain open. BIS and DDTC export licensing could cease, as well. If your license expires during a shutdown, you should contact your local ATF office to confirm that your license remains valid during the government shutdown.

NSSF® is monitoring the situation and we will continue to provide critical updates and report further developments as warranted. |
